Mademoiselle Lenglen has again convincingly demonstrated her superiority over every other woman player in the world, and in doing so she has effectively disproved criticism from various sources that her mana is on the wane. How far this is from being true is shown by the fact that during the present tournament none of her opponents ran her to vantage in a single set, whereas last year Miss Ryan took her to 6 all in one set and Miss McKane to 5 all in another. Mlle Lenglen’s magnetic attractions as a player are also shown by the way in which her appearances filled the stands around the centre court. Last year she met Miss McKane in the second round, and the match attracted a record attendance of 14,000 spectators, including the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. The French champion was easily superior in the first set, which she won 6-l, but Miss McKane made a great fight of the second, in which she led 3-0, but ultimately lost 5-7. Mlle Lenglen has now won the ladies’ singles at Wimbledon for five years in succession without the loss of a single set.  — by ‘Smash’

Labour MP excoriates Budget

Mr J.W. Munro (Dunedin North) caustically analysed from the Labour viewpoint the ideals of the Reform Government. ‘‘The Budget,’’ he declared, “reads like a fairytale — it is too good to be true.’’ The Reform Party formerly declared the people had to choose between the Union Jack and the Red Flag, but the real fight today was not one of flags, but whether we would worship the god of Mammon or the god of Humanity. Where were Reform’s accusations against the Labour today? The Reform Government was as meek as the proverbial lamb, simply because the people at the ballot box had shown their opinion of its attack on Labour. Reform worshipped the god of Mammon.

Labour’s attack unconvincing

Mr Munro, speaking for the Labour Party, seems to have delivered a characteristic address, in which old phrases bulked largely. The alleged raid on wages, the god of Mammon and the blessings which would flow from the adoption of Labour principles are familiar phrases.

But they are unconvincing, for the reason that Mr Munro bases his arguments on unrealities rather than on facts, and it cannot be supposed that they grip the attention of the House. It may be fairly claimed that so far as the debate has proceeded the salient points of the Budget have not been successfully attacked. — editorial

Governor-General invited

The Otago Boys’ High School was founded in 1863, and the diamond jubilee festivities are to extend from August 3 to 7. A massive memorial arch has been erected in honour of those, connected with the school, who served in the Great War. The celebration will commence with the unveiling of this memorial, and the presentation to the school of a roll of honour. It is hoped that the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) will perform the unveiling ceremony.

That’s minus 14.4degC

The severity of the frosts in Otago Central may be gauged from the fact that at Oturehua on Sunday last 26 degrees Fahrenheit of frost was registered, on Monday 27degF, and on Tuesday 21degF. — ODT, 12.7.1923
