The largest pile of glacial deposit in New Zealand forms a low range of hills that bound the east side of the Taieri Plain, Otago.

It extends from Allanton, about 15 miles out of Dunedin, to the southern end of Mount Misery, in the Clutha Valley, a distance of about 27 miles. It may be traced from Mount Misery along the north side of an ancient Clutha glacial valley, to the Blue Spur, near Lawrence, where it has been worked for gold. Professor J. Park states that the Taieri moraine was formed by a great sheet of ice that descended the Clutha Valley, overspread the Barewood Plateau, and passed over and around Mount Maungatua into the upper end of the Taieri Basin. The main flow of the ice was south towards the lower end of the basin, but the ice also flowed over the site of the present coastal range to the sea.

Flu closes Boys’ High

When the Otago Boys’ High School assembled yesterday morning it was found that 147 boys were absent, most of them suffering from influenza. Six of the masters were also absent, and three or four of those present were not in the best of health. Under the circumstances, it was decided to close the school till tomorrow morning. The Girls’ High School has also been affected, but not so seriously. As only two teachers are incapacitated, the school is being kept open.

Quite harmless

On Sunday afternoon a male patient made his escape from the Seacliff Mental Hospital. He is an imbecile who wanders about without sense of direction and was committed from the Otekaike special school on January 1, 1920. He looks like a youth 17 or 18 though in reality he is 30 years of age. His height is 5ft 3in and his weight 8 stone, and he has a pale, sickly complexion and black hair. He is quite harmless.

Fifty, not out

Mr and Mrs H. Hadlee, of Greenock street, Kaikorai, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday. They were married in Dunedin in 1873, and have resided in Kaikorai ever since. Members of the family and a few friends entertained Mr and Mrs Hadlee.
