Thousands converged on Lawrence on Saturday for its 28th annual rodeo to see riders pit themselves against animals and the clock.

Lawrence Rodeo Club president Graham Kenny said entries were up this year due to five rodeos being staged in eight days at Lawrence, Waikouaiti, Outram, Mataura and Invercargill.

''It's good to be the first one of the southern circuit - we've had more entries because the rodeos are so close together.''

He paid tribute to the club's former president and life member Ross Lyders, who died last September. Mr Lyders was the club's president for 15 years and had huge passion and dedication for the sport, Mr Kenny said.

About 2000 people attended the event, basking in the sunny weather.

Mr Kenny said the day was ''fairly hot'', with the majority of events completed before the temperatures began to soar.

St John staff reported the ''usual bruises and sprains'' from competitors with no major injuries, but the heat was too much for some spectators who received treatment for sunburn and fainting spells.

The main drawcard was the open bull section, with 17 bull riders entered. The rodeo featured top saddle-bronc riders and horses.

Club promotions officer Brent Taylor said the rodeo drew a top competitor from the United States - Jared Hofstetter, who won the rope and tie section.

The New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit continues on Wednesday with the Outram Rodeo.
