Board votes on rates change

Ratepayers in the Vincent Community Board living outside of Alexandra are likely to pay less for their recreation and cultural rate following a decision made yesterday by the board.

Bands have been established around the Alexandra Ward to allow for different rating levels for those further away from the facilities.

The overall changes voted on by the board yesterday will mean Alexandra Ward ratepayers will pay $185 as their portion of the recreation and cultural rate, those living within the second band set at about 17km out from the Alexandra Ward boundary at Chatto Creek will pay $111 and the remaining ratepayers outside those areas will pay $18 for their portion.

Ratepayers living in the old Earnscleugh Ward who have been transferred to the Alexandra Ward after changes made to electoral boundaries by the Local Government Commission in 2007, received a large increase in the recreational and cultural portion of their rates.

Several submissions were made to the Draft Annual Plan and some of those increases received a remission.

Council agreed to investigate an alternative approach for the upcoming Long-term Council Community Plan (LTCCP).

The council agreed certain cost centres within the Alexandra Ward provided benefits to the community board area beyond the Alexandra Ward such as Molyneux Aquatic Centre, Molyneux Stadium and Molyneux Park.

The new system will be used as part of the LTCCP when setting rates for those areas.
