Members of the Molyneux Cricket Club and the Blacks Hill Cricket Club were at Molyneux Park to watch the Otago Volts play Northern Knights.
The boys watching had a few stand-out favourites among the players, including Nathan McCullum and Aaron Redmond.
Jack Small, of Moa Creek, for whom Jacob Duffy was also a hero, said watching the game at the ground was better than seeing it on television.
''You can see everything.''
Some of the young players were possibly learning a thing or two, as well.
Tom Wilson, of Poolburn, and a big McCullum fan, said he had been playing cricket for about two years, and would probably go home to practise after the game.
For him, the best part of the day was the first six scored by Otago.
Flynn Donnelly, of Alexandra, said he had watched cricket live before, but was now looking forward to getting back to playing after the school holidays.
Years three and four team coach - and Flynn's father - Liam Donnelly said he thought watching the game was a good opportunity for the young players.
''Most of them don't really watch but just getting the atmosphere, getting on the pitch at halftime, that's pretty cool for them.''
Although this was the second season of having elite domestic cricket back in Alexandra, it was still a good feeling.
Molyneux Park's warrant had been withdrawn about three years ago and games had been moved elsewhere.
''It's definitely nice to see the game back here. It's such a nice spot to play cricket at,'' Mr Donnelly said.
The quality of the grounds had previously declined but now they had improved again and Molyneux Cricket Club [an amalgamation of the Alexandra and Dunstan Clubs and school teams] premier and junior teams were able to play there.
The group of young players watching the game on Saturday would get their chance to get back on the field in February, when school and the season resumed.
Until then, there were a lot of games of backyard cricket to play.
