The 50 Alexandra Squadron followed closely behind,
marking 150 years of cadet forces and Armistice Day remembrance celebrations yesterday.
About 250 people attended the event in Pioneer Park at 11am, during which the Alexandra Clyde RSA 25 pounder gun fired a two-round salute, speakers from the Air Training Corps addressed the group, the national anthem was sung, and those gathered were led in prayer.
Alexandra Clyde RSA president Kevin Harding said the parade was mainly about the cadets, and a practice for the 2018 Armistice Day parade at the end of the WW100 commemorations, which mark the centenary of World War 1.
Air Training Corps guest speakers from the 50 Alexandra Squadron, Sergeant Jono Martin (17), Corporal Sarah Mead-Flower (16) and Leading Aircraftman Alanah Smyth (16) spoke to the crowd.
Not only were people commemorating the 96th anniversary of Armistice Day and the end of WW1, but also remembering it was 100 years since the declaration of war, and celebrating that in 1864, the first cadet force in New Zealand was established in Dunedin.
A service in honour of WW1 servicemen was also held in Oturehua yesterday. During the commemoration, a parade was conducted, as well as a roll call and planting of an oak tree.
Memorial boards with photographs and the names of each soldier from the district were also unveiled.
