Omakau and Manuherikia Valley residents are being asked what community spaces are needed in the area as the future of the local hall and rugby clubrooms hangs in the balance.

The Central Otago District Council has determined the Omakau Memorial Hall is underutilised and it and the Matakanui Combined Rugby Clubrooms both need significant investment to be brought up to modern standards.

The council and the Omakau and Manuherikia Community Spaces Working Group posted a survey to residents last week asking which community spaces they used and what they would like to see provided in the area.

Working group spokesman Ross Naylor said a feasibility study was commissioned on possible future uses for the facilities, but he added it was also important to know what the community thought.

Many sports clubs and community groups did not have adequate facilities, he said.

''The hall needs a bit of earthquake strengthening to just fix it, let alone bring it to a modern standard,'' Mr Naylor said.

The rugby clubrooms were well-used but also needed a lot of work, he said.

''Because the Anglican and Presbyterian churches both closed, the rugby clubrooms are being used as a funeral venue, but they're not a funeral venue at all,'' Mr Naylor said.

He hoped local groups would all voice the need for a combined community space, as this would make fundraising easier.

''There are all sorts of sporting groups needing a new facility. We want to see if groups are enthusiastic about creating a new space.''

Council community development manager Paula Penno said a new space would need to accommodate various group sizes and be able to be used by more than one group at a time, if required.

''The development and ongoing maintenance of the community space must also be affordable, and sustainable, for the Omakau and wider Manuherikia communities.''

The survey is also available online and at various businesses around Omakau, and the Omakau and Poolburn schools and should be returned by Friday, June 28.
