Car backs off Beaumont bridge, then bank

All a Southland truck driver could do was watch in disbelief as a car backed off the road and down a bank near the Clutha River earlier today.

Gore truck driver Blair Powell was stopped at the lights on the Beaumont bridge when he saw a car reversing off the bridge and eventually falling down a bank.

Mr Powell said the driver of the vehicle had to reverse to allow for an oncoming Hilux ute to pass.

Once off the bridge the driver failed to see the edge of the bank and reversed straight over it.

Unable to do anything he contacted the police but left the scene before they arrived.

A police spokeswoman said the two occupants were uninjured and organised a tow truck to retrieve the car from the bank.

Despite the bridge being a regular part of his journey it was the first time he had seen anything like that.

"That's the first time I've seen that happen there, but as a truck driver we sure see things like this often."
