Car crash not suspicious

A burnt-out car discovered on a remote Otago bridge is not being considered suspicious but police are appealing for the driver to come forward.

A section of State Highway 87, about 20km from Ranfurly, was closed for much of Monday by a car gutted by fire resting in the railings of the Kokonga bridge over the Taieri River.

Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, of Central Otago CIB, said yesterday police had not spoken with the registered owner of the car, who was the driver, but had spoken to their family.

''It is believed the driver is OK at this stage but we are still appealing to the driver to make contact with police.''

The incident was being treated as a vehicle crash and was not suspicious, he said.
