The Central Otago District Council has yet to tender for the work, which will comprise the painting of all exterior walls and most roofs on the town's public library, community centre, community theatre, and memorial hall.
CODC property manager Mike Kerr said council staff were this week compiling information to be included in a contract document, which would then be sent out for tender.
Mr Kerr said depending on the tendering process, he hoped work could be completed before the heat of Alexandra's summer made painting a futile exercise.
"Hopefully it will be finished around October or November, otherwise it will have to be stopped and work started again in March or April next year," he said.
The work is being done as a part of the council's ongoing property maintenance programme, and will be the CODC's largest single project in Alexandra this financial year.
Mr Kerr said the paint job will be the first time the entire complex, of four adjoining buildings and a set of second floor offices, has been uniformly painted.
What used to be the council's office space and is now the library, was built in 1981, after which the rest of the property was developed.
Much of the complex's exterior paint was original, apart from the community centre which was refurbished in 1989, and again in 2001.
Colours for the complex have yet to be decided, although they would comply with a CODC branding palette developed for use throughout the district.
As a separate project, the public toilets next to the complex will also be upgraded by the council this year.
Work on both projects could overlap, depending on how the tendering process went.
"The aim is to get the toilets completed before Christmas as well, but that will be a full refurbishment," he said.
Construction is not expected to close the library community centre, hall, or theatre.
