Film-makers eye the South

The backers of two feature films are considering filming in Central Otago, the Central Otago District Council heard yesterday.

"We're hoping either one or both the proposals will come through," Film Otago Southland Trust manager Kevin Jennings told the council.

Speaking after the meeting, he said could not disclose any details about the films at this stage.

During the meeting, Mr Jennings said Queenstown was the third largest production hub for film activity in this country, behind Auckland and Christchurch.

Central Otago was also benefitting from increased filming activity, with 10 television commercials having been shot in the district in the past year.

"Whether the crews only have a few people or between 200 and 300 people, they still have a direct economic impact on the area, " Mr Jennings said.

A database of photos featuring what the area had to offer was helping promote the district to film-makers.

"They're different images [to] your standard tourism shots.

"We were asked by one crew for photos of country rugby fields, for example."

Mr Jennings said there was demand for a film studio in the South Island, and he believed it should be located near Queenstown.

Studies were being done to assess the viability of such a venture and its potential economic benefit to the region.
