High-speed pursuit arrests

A high-speed police pursuit of a vehicle around central Alexandra streets yesterday afternoon ended in three young Alexandra men being charged with driving-related offences.

Police began the pursuit in Centennial Ave about 3pm, and tailed the vehicle at speed towards Clyde and back into Alexandra, where they were led on a fast chase around Chicago St, Royal Tce, Spencer St, Moa St, Kenmare St, Killarney St and Tarbert St.

Senior Sergeant Mike Cook, of Alexandra, said the pursuit ended about 3.20pm in Dunstan Rd, when a member of the public driving in front of the car being pursued slowed down and enabled police to stop the vehicle.

"We want to express our thanks to that member of the public for what he did, which was excellent. Without his assistance, the pursuit would have continued on longer, becoming more dangerous as time went on," Snr Sgt Cook said.

He said three Alexandra men aged between 18 and 22 gave themselves up to police once the vehicle was stopped.

The car is owned by one of the men.

Snr Sgt Cook said police tried to stop the vehicle by placing road spikes in Tarbert St, but the driver avoided them.

One of the three men charged is due to appear before a judge in the Alexandra District Court today, while the other two will appear in the court before a registrar on Tuesday.

The vehicle was impounded.

Snr Sgt Cook said it was fort-unate no-one was injured, and that no property, including the pursued vehicle, was damaged.
