A pair of historic buildings near Alexandra dating back to the 19th century have been sold.

The former Cape Broom Hotel and Dairy schist buildings had been owned by Stuart and Diane Duncan for 10 years.

The dairy is one of only three hexagonal stone buildings in New Zealand.

The buildings are situated at the back of a modern home at Fruitlands, 13km from Alexandra.

A real estate listing for the property says the hotel and dairy buildings, which date back to the 1870s, were set up as a bed and breakfast establishment.

A fire destroyed the hotel in 1910 but the stone walls remained intact.

The gutted building was firstly converted to a packing shed and later into a shearing shed.

Ms Duncan said the property was sold about three weeks ago.

She would not disclose the sale price or the identity of the new owners.
