If watching sport from the comfort of an armchair appeals but you know getting outdoors is good for you there is a perfect sporting event coming to Central Otago.

Cromwell Radio Yacht Squadron Commodore Alexa Bell said the club would host the international one-metre South Island championships at Waitangi weekend.

The regatta at the Lake Dunstan Boat Club from February 6–8, was expected to attract around 30 sailors from across New Zealand for three days of competitive racing, Mrs Bell said.

Cromwell sailor Jamie White was ranked second nationally so would be feeling the pressure to perform on his home ground ... or water.

Sailors would be competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with district honours for Otago, Canterbury, Tasman, and the North Island.

The event also served as one of the final lead-up regattas before the international one-metre World Championships in the United Kingdom, making it an important preparation event for top competitors, she said.

Spectators were warmly invited to come along to the free event.

"Bring a picnic and a chair, sit back, and enjoy the racing action on the lake."

Racing would start at 3pm on February 6 and continue throughout the weekend.
