The first of nine houses to be cleared to make way for a new Countdown supermarket in Alexandra hit the road on Thursday night.

The house, which was transported less than 10km to Letts Gully was the first to be cleared from the 0.8ha site bordering Centennial Ave and Ventry St to make way for the 3000sq m supermarket, which was granted resource consent in January.

Site manager John Kilgour said the next house would be relocated to Bluff in Southland in coming days. Another is to be relocated to Omakau.

A further three were likely to be taken to Omakau as worker accommodation, he said.

The three remaining houses were unsuitable for removal and would be demolished.

Mr Kilgour said it was the responsibility of the new owners to repurpose the homes, but reusing them when housing was in short short supply was environmentally friendly and responsible.

The site is expected to be fully cleared by next month.

We need more houses, do we really need more supermarkets (unless it is proper competition for the duopoly)?
