'Improved safety' from changes

A community road safety adviser and police have praised plans for a safety upgrade of Centennial Ave in Alexandra.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said police welcomed any initiatives that improved the flow of traffic on the avenue and improved safety.

The intersection of Clutha and Killarney Sts with Centennial Ave - which is also State Highway 8 - had a history of traffic incidents and crashes, he said.

Community road safety adviser Jo Robinson said she fully supported removing angle parking on Centennial Ave between Shannon and Brandon Sts.

"Drivers who are reversing normally pull out into the flow of traffic to ascertain if there are vehicles coming. To do this, they are normally already in the zone where a cyclist will be travelling.

"The upgrade would result in improved safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians," Mrs Robinson said.

"From a community point of view, the two most important things are the roundabout at Killarney St and the new pedestrian crossing close to New World [on Centennial Ave].

"Apart from controlling an awful intersection, the roundabout will create pauses in traffic further down Centennial Ave, which will make all intersections safer."

The pedestrian crossing close to New World had been on her wish list for some time, as it was "very important" for mobility scooter users and pedestrians, she said.

"From a road safety point of view, I am thrilled that this work is going ahead.

"It will greatly improve the safety of both pedestrians and cyclists on Centennial Ave, and also all users of the Killarney St intersection."
