Improvements will make roadway safer

Improvements to part of Waenga Dr in Cromwell should improve cyclist safety and lessen crashes into parked cars, a roading engineer said.

Peter Cuthbertson, Central Otago District Council roading engineer, said the road between Barry Ave and Murray Tce was not very wide and was used by a large number of heavy vehicles.

"By widening the road we will keep cars further off the carriageway. Having a larger gap between cars using the road and those parked there, means drivers will have more time to react if children run out. It will also be safer for cyclists."

The project was initiated by the Cromwell Community Board, Mr Cuthbertson said, and crash data confirmed the widening was necessary.

Council road reserve would be used to incorporate the wider road, he said, and the work would also include new footpaths.

The budget for the work is $94,000, with footpath improvements and renewals $33,000.

Car parking and traffic movement would be affected during the work, Mr Cuthbertson said, but every effort would be made to ensure disruption was minimised.
