Franco-American folk singer Tess Liautaud is bringing her Gold Digger tour to Central Otago this week.

The tour name is the title of her new song, written while she was in Otago.

Liautaud said she was born in France and, thanks to her American mother, was brought up as an American in France.

After several years in New Zealand, and recording an album at Sublime Studio, in Kurow, she bid farewell a year ago to return to the northern hemisphere.

However, she is back and playing intimate gigs in Central Otago and Upper Clutha.

"I’ve played folk for years but I wanted a bigger sound to explore my music references," Liautaud said.

Unusually, she was not signed to a label.

"It’s a default for me ... but the more I look into it, the more I think that I should stay that way."

A huge Bruce Springsteen fan, she ended up on stage with him during a show in Paris.

"I was holding up a sign, he noticed and I got called up on stage.

"I ended up on stage playing and singing with them.

"[Springsteen] lifted my arm in the air — he gave me my moment."
