Local groups support community house proposal

The proposed community house in Alexandra is ‘‘moving forward'', concept group chairwoman Bernice Lepper says.

The process of completing the constitution to form a charitable trust was under way to give the group legal status, after which it could apply for grants for funding, she said.

‘‘It's moving forward - the next stage is getting the concept drawings done and fundraising,'' Mrs Lepper said.

‘‘It totally depends on raising the funds for it to go ahead.''

The initial consultation with about 70 community groups, and the feasibility study had ‘‘certainly shown there was a need for it in the community''.

‘‘We're confident over a period of time we'll be able to raise the funds.''

Along with about 30 to 40 groups which would use the community house in the town, several Dunedin groups had shown an interest for it to be used as a base when they visited the region, she said.

The centre would replace Church House, a hall and an opportunity shop next to St Enoch's Union Church in Centennial Ave.

The buildings are at present used by the Citizens Advice Bureau, Central Otago Women's Support Link, Budget Advice Services and Catholic Social Services.
