The western carpark is receiving more use through new retail development on that side of the mall and Central Otago District Council staff and Cromwell Community Board members have been fielding a raft of complaints about the protruding stones set in concrete that divide the carpark.
Residents are complaining about having to navigate their way across the uneven surface, over the river stones set in concrete.
"Quite a few people have said it's a trip[ping] hazard and also, people are walking behind the parked cars, to avoid that centre piece of stones," council community facility officer Evelyn Bisset said.
The river stone dividers have been in place for about 25 years and formed part of the landscaping work when the mall was built.
"It would be easy to say it's always been like that, but with development at that end of the mall, that area and the carpark is getting more use, so it's become more of an issue recently, " board chairman Neil Gillespie said.
"It's simpler to say, 'Let's sort this out', and that's what we're doing."
The board voted this week to spend about $7000 removing the concrete and stones and laying paving stones in their place.
The paving stones can be lifted and re-used if that area is altered during the proposed upgrade of the mall.
