The smell of liniment wafted through the Becks Hall on Saturday for the first time in almost two decades, bringing back memories of when the domain was used regularly for rugby matches.
A crowd of about 250 people watched the Matakanui Combined rugby club play Upper Clutha at the domain, in the first competition rugby game held at the venue for about 20 years.
"The weather was fine, we had a good turnout and lots of local support, and the grounds were in good condition. The only disappointing thing on the day was that we couldn't manage a win, but all credit to Upper Clutha," Matakanui club chairman Ben Hore said.
"Everyone seemed to enjoy the day though, and the locals said it brought back lots of memories. We're hoping it can become a regular fixture, playing one home game a year at Becks."
Upper Clutha won the match 29-5.
The hall next to the grounds was used as changing rooms and for socialising after the game. There are plans to redevelop the hall and the next fundraising event planned is a ball being staged by the Upper Manuherikia Young Farmers Club on June 11.
