Meeting calls for rezoning

The Hawea Community Association (HCA) wants defined urban boundaries for the Lake Hawea township included in the Queenstown Lakes District Council's district plan review.

About 25 members of the community met last weekend to endorse a concept to rezone an area south of the main township for increased-density residential development and to secure town boundaries along Cemetery and Muir Rds.

There are no statutory boundaries for the town at present. The 2003 Lake Hawea community plan had already identified the rural residential area south of the main township, between Timsfield to the west and Muir Rd to the east, as an area which could be considered for rezoning to township zone in the future.

HCA president Rachel Brown said there was "unanimous" support from those at the meeting for rezoning to provide for growth, which reiterated the community view from nearly a decade ago.

The HCA also wanted a clear distinction between the township zone and the rural general area further to the south, towards Hawea Flat, by defining the town boundaries to guard against future urban sprawl, Ms Brown said.

Queenstown Lakes district councillor Jude Battson lives in Sam John Pl, part of the three-stage Grandview subdivision and within the rural residential area being considered for rezoning. She said she supported the HCA's rezoning request but wanted a minimum lot size to be enforced to ensure a "softer edge" around the southern entrance to the township.

"I believe that all of stage one [of Grandview] and possibly stage two ... should be zoned residential but not to go lower than half an acre."

"A number of people ...they've situated their houses for further subdivision down to residential and some are thinking 800sq m."

Larger lots would ensure landowners did not run into difficulties with "financially onerous" subdivision requirements and would deter people wanting to "make a quick buck" without having "the community interest at heart", she said.

The council is consulting on the district plan, due to be notified in October 2013.
