An exhibition of contrasting work — photographic and painted — opens today in Cromwell.‘‘A World Around Us’’ brings together the vibrant paintings of Andrew J. Wallace and the photography of Anne Pullar.

Pullar’s photographic work draws on landscapes and the creatures that live in them across the world.

Her images, based on observation and immersion in place, reveal the essence of environments through careful attention to light, texture, and atmosphere. They invite viewers to slow down, contemplate the interplay between stillness and our busy world, while developing a deeper connection with the world around them.

Her diverse body of work spans New Zealand landscapes, impressionistic studies and international projects.

Complementing Pullar’s photography is the expressive painting of Andrew J Wallace, whose work captures colour, form and mood with bold brushwork and thoughtful composition.

Wallace’s portfolio features a range of pieces created in Central Otago, including Sunshine, inspired by sunflowers growing outside Alexandra. His paintings, vibrant and evocative, bring their own perspective to familiar and imagined worlds.

Pullar said the pair had long held a mutual respect for each other’s work but it was Andrew’s involvement in a 2025 Charity through Art Auction in Dubai that really prompted the conversation. Three of his paintings raised $21,000 to support children with disabilities in India, and he continues to send work to Dubai to help raise funds for this cause.

‘‘I felt strongly that our local community should have the opportunity to see Andrew’s work here at home. When I raised the idea with him, his response was simple: we should do it together. From that conversation, ‘A World Around Us’ was born — a shared exhibition that brings two perspectives together and celebrates both art and community.’’

Together Pullar and Wallace forge a visual conversation that spans medium and method. ‘‘A World Around Us’’ showcases how different artistic lenses, photographic and painterly, can reveal both the external landscapes we inhabit and the internal responses they trigger. — Allied Media
