Otago Polytechnic will have a new chief executive in time for the new learning year.

An Otago Polytechnic spokesperson said Citycare Properties general manager — safety, risk and resilience Andrew McSweeney had been appointed to the role following the resignation of current chief executive Dr Megan Pōtiki from December 31.

Mr McSweeney would bring extensive leadership experience from across both private and public sector organisations, including significant roles from within the vocational education sector, the spokesperson said.

Mr McSweeney said he was honoured and humbled to be able to step into the role and felt energised by the opportunity ahead.

"My focus will be on building on the strong foundations already in place and ensuring we work together to deliver outstanding outcomes for learners, industry, iwi and the wider Otago region."

The organisation was grounded in strength and had a proud history of innovation, excellence and community partnership, he said.

The polytechnic played a vital role in supporting regional skills development, workforce capability, and community wellbeing.

"I am committed to partnering and working closely with staff, iwi, industry partners, and the community to further strengthen that impact," he said.

Dr Pōtiki said earlier she was leaving to pursue new challenges.

In a message to staff, she acknowledged the support of her wider leadership team in navigating the ups and downs of the transition period, as the government worked towards disestablishing Te Pūkenga and restoring regional decision-making for vocational education.
