Omakau racecourse was flat out at the weekend but the rides were two-wheeled, rather than four-legged.

The annual Vincent County Rally, organised by Bikers Rights Organisation of New Zealand (Bronz) Otago, was attended by about 700 people on nearly as many motorbikes.

Bronz chairman Colin Gillespie said the event was very successful and positive.

It was a nostalgic reunion for some with riders from all around the world attending.

‘‘We had a couple from the North Island, one from Perth and a one from Scotland who came for the second time.’’

With the Burt Munro Challenge the following weekend many were taking the opportunity to do both events and riding in Central Otago in between, Mr Gillespie said.

‘‘It’s created a flow-on. We have the two biggest South Island rallies back-to-back.’’

People enjoyed talking about and looking at the bikes, including a rare Honda VF1000R from the 1980s, and a band in the evening, he said.

The new venue was a definite winner and a big improvement on the old one at Galloway.

Omakau offered much better shade, which was important for an event held at the hottest time of the year and most people were camping in tents.

Lighting and the toilets were a big step-up from the portaloos at the former site, he said.
