Optimism for art sales total

Art lovers opened their wallets wide at Friday night's second "Under the Hammer" art auction in Cromwell.

Although the final total would depend on commissions paid, event co-ordinator Dean Comerford was sure there would be at least as much as the $6000 raised last year.

The auction tied in with the Cromwell College 30th Jubilee and participants registered for the weekend activities at the event.

Seventy-five works were up for auction including some from guest artists from around the region and 22 pieces from college students. A further 126 works were also on display for silent auction.

Jubilee convener Tony Streeter said one woman came from Japan while there were six people registered from Australia and the remaining 140 registered for the jubilee came from all over NZ.

On Saturday netball and touch tournaments were held between school teams and ex-pupils. The highlight of the weekend was a golf game at The Hills Golf Course at Arrowtown.
