An Auckland brother and sister were lucky to escape without serious injury early yesterday, after road barriers were all that stopped their car from plunging 20m down a bank.
Senior Constable Jape Wanoa, of Roxburgh, said the siblings were driving from Wanaka to Roxburgh when the vehicle left the road at Shingle Creek.
"Had the road barriers not been there, the car would have dropped 20m. They were very lucky," he said.
The 22-year-old man driving the vehicle was uninjured but his 24-year-old sister received some bruising to her legs and was treated at the Roxburgh Medical Centre. The car was badly damaged.
Snr Const Wanoa believed the driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The man has been charged with careless driving.
