This damaged angel atop the war memorial monument in Waipiata will be replaced, with the original to be mounted in a cabinet and displayed in the township's hall.
Waipiata residents are appealing for funding to help towards the purchase of a new angel in the small Maniototo settlement.

The Waipiata Community Development Committee resolved at its annual meeting recently to put $2000 towards a replacement - estimated to cost $5000 - for the damaged angel atop the township's war memorial monument.

Over the years, the figure had a section of its right arm broken off, plus it had several chips and holes.

Repair was not considered an appropriate option, and the committee agreed to approach five organisations to help fund a replacement in white marble.

The original angel would be displayed in a cabinet at the Waipiata hall.

The Returned and Services' Association of Dunedin, Maniototo Community Board, Waipiata Ute Muster Committee, Taieri Lake Recreation Reserve Committee and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's heritage operations unit would be asked to contribute to the project.

Pedestal damage would also be fixed.
