More than 100 Harley-Davidson motorbikes and their riders from around the lower South Island converged on Central Otago on Saturday.

The Ghost to Gold ride was the first ride of the summer for the Deep South chapter of the New Zealand Harley Owners Club.

Chapter director Kevin Moylan, of Dunedin, said 75 bikes left Dunedin on a run that took riders north to Palmerston, before they headed inland to Ranfurly over SH87, the Pigroot.

Joined by more riders on the way, it was on to St Bathans, for a stop at the Vulcan Hotel, before the ride continued to the Como Villa vineyard, just out of Alexandra, for a late lunch.

From there it was a short trip to Clyde, where riders, many of who had pillion passengers, spent the night.

"It's been a long, hard winter so it's great to get back out on the road again. It's just good fun," Mr Moylan said.

Yesterday, the riders ran charity rides across the Clyde dam to raise money for the Clyde Kindergarten and rugby club.

They also held raffles on Saturday night to raise money for the same organisations.

The ride would be the subject of an article in The Hog magazine, sold in Australia and New Zealand, Mr Moylan said.

It was hoped the publicity would attract Australia Harley owners to visit the area and experience the roads of the lower South Island.

Dunedin will host the New Zealand Harley-Davidson Rally in 2012 and Mr Moylan expected riders from Australia to travel to the event.

"I know guys in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania who will ship their own bikes over."

The Deep South chapter is the southern-most Harley group in the world.
