Quick-thinking and well-trained staff were praised following a fire at a popular Clyde bar and cafe on Monday evening.

Clyde Chief Fire Officer Steve Gee said the staff at Paulina’s Bar, in Sunderland St, did all the right things.

"I was very happy and very impressed with the actions of staff. They minimised the impact of the fire. They obviously had good training especially around fat and grease ... they took the right actions and then a full evacuation."

Multiple calls were received about the roof fire around 9.30pm as it was highly visible and there were a lot of people around, CFO Gee said.

The fire was centred in the kitchen around the extractor fan, which was a common cause of commercial kitchen fires.

There was little internal damage to the bar but cabling in the ceiling had been damaged, he said.

The brigade had a perfect turn-out for the call.

They had volunteers who were on holiday or working long hours but despite that they had a really good turnout, he said.

An Alexandra crew also responded to the calls.

Paulina’s Bar owner Shane Hilton said the fire was out by 10.10pm.
