A multimillion-dollar wine tasting facility is being built at Te Kano Estate, in Bannockburn.

The company this week announced construction of the new facility had begun and it would house a tasting room, entertaining spaces and offices.

The development signified "the company's ongoing investment in Central Otago", a statement said.

The tasting room facility will be in the company's "Eliza" vineyard, on Felton Rd.

The building, designed by Dunedin firm Mason & Wales Architects, will be cantilevered over the Kawarau River.

Longer term, the company was planning an accommodation and restaurant development, Te Kano Estate owner Rhonda Lloyd said.

Other initiatives under way included a kowhai regeneration project, Mrs Lloyd said.

Te Kano winemaker Dave Sutton said the new tasting room would give people "a glimpse of what's to come" for the wine company.

"We have invested heavily in more than 42ha of vineyards throughout the region, including 32ha planted in Northburn and 5ha planted on Felton Rd, producing primarily pinot noir, chardonnay and blanc de noir (white pinot noir)."

Construction at the Felton Rd site is expected to finish in mid-June, and the building scheduled to open to visitors from September.
