More than 40 friends and family members from the Wanaka Combined Churches pitched in together to put on a Christmas Day feast for people away from their homes.

The feast of chicken, ham, new potatoes, fresh vegetables and all the trimmings took the group of volunteers two days to prepare and catered for about 150 Christmas dinner guests.

The Wanaka combined churches have hosted a Christmas Day "backpackers"' lunch for resort visitors and those in the Upper Clutha community away from family, for the past decade.

Chief organiser Jenni McDougall said volunteers found the day rewarding.

"Many of those who help want to involve their families and children in the Christmas spirit of giving," she said.

Many other visitors to Wanaka on Christmas Day tookthe opportunity to indulgein some sightseeing and fun time.

Tourism attractions, such as Puzzling World, were popular.

The front lawn, games room, and maze hummed with dozens of visitors enjoying theirholiday.

Puzzling World manager Heidi Landsborough said campervans had been queueing at the gates when staff opened the facility yesterday morning.

"It's been really busy, with tour groups travelling through and visitors popping in and out," she said.
