Young dancers get guidance from NZ's best

Young ballet dancers learned from the best in Alexandra yesterday, when a member of the Royal New Zealand Ballet held two creative dance workshops in the town.

RNZB education department dance educator Daniel Cooper, of Auckland, taught two groups of about 30 children how to choreograph their own dance moves based on their dreams and imagination.

The Central Otago Dance Development Group asked RNZB to run workshops in the district while it was based in Invercargill and Dunedin during its tour of Don Quixote.

The group received a grant from the Central Lakes Trust's art section to host the workshops.

During the hour-long workshops at Dunstan High School, Mr Cooper took young dancers through choreography ideas associated with the Don Quixote production.

"Major aspects of the show are based on dreams and imaginative dance sequences.

The children's movements will be based on their own dreams and I'm basically giving them an insight into how choreography works," he said.

Primary school-aged children had their session from 3.30pm, with secondary school-aged pupils starting their workshop at 4.30pm.
