A Department of Conservation worker at the centre of a search and rescue operation at Macraes in Central Otago last night walked into a farmhouse in the area about 7.30am this morning.

It is understood the man is safe and well.

A search and rescue opertion was launched about 6pm last night after the 23-year-old, who was setting traps in the area for the department, failed to meet up again with a co-worker after they split up at 1.30pm.

He was expected to have completed his work within two hours.

The search team included a helicopter and seven teams on foot searching the area near Ramrock Rd and Daighton Creek.

Fears had been mounting for the worker believed lost in the Macraes mine area, near Middlemarch.

It is understood the man was experienced in the outdoors, but may not have been equipped for bad weather.
