Mt Rosa fire out

Otago Rural Fire Authority says it will seek to recover the cost of fighting a small scrub fire in Gibbston yesterday.

Authority Southern Lakes deputy rural fire officer Jamie Cowan said 11 fire volunteers doused a rubbish fire which escaped from a rubbish pit and burnt its way towards the ridgeline of Mt Rosa.

''We had volunteers on site there for a couple of hours and they put it all out,'' he said late yesterday afternoon.

''They'll monitor a wee bit over the next few hours to make sure nothing else pops up.

''Once we've assessed costs we will look to the person who lit the fire to recover those costs.''

Mr Cowan thought the fire burnt about 1km, but

Mt Rosa Wines owner Guy Boanas said: ''If it went more than 150m I'd be surprised.''
