'50 min to Dunedin' not attraction

Tourism Waitaki's draft tourism strategy ignores anything south of the Moeraki Boulders, Waihemo Community Board members complained this week.

The regional tourist body's manager, Jason Gaskill, presented the strategy to Monday's board meeting in Palmerston but it was roundly criticised for not listingany activities or attractions south of the Moeraki Boulders, except ''travel to Dunedin 50 minutes''.

It did, however, list paid and free activities in Omarama, Duntroon and Oamaru, including the hot tubs at Omarama, the Elephant Rocks near Duntroon and Whitestone Cheese, the Steampunk HQ, the Oamaru Blue Penguin colony and Victorian precinct in Oamaru.

Accommodation and dinner options are given in Oamaru.

The only activity in the Waitaki District listed south of Oamaru was a visit to the Moeraki Boulders.

Waitaki District councillor and Waihemo Community Board member Kathy Dennison said it was ''disappointing'' the sample itinerary listed nothing south of Moeraki.

There was no mention of stopping at Shag Point, tours to the Oceana Gold mine at Macraes or stopping in Palmerston, she said.

Board chairman Geoff Foote, of Flag Swamp, had similar concerns at the lack of references to features around Palmerston including its prominent hill, Puketapu, as well as the town.

The district tourism strategy was a working document that could be ''added to, or subtracted from'', Mr Gaskill told the Waihemo board.

The draft tourism strategy will go to the Waitaki District Council today for adoption.
