A ''team effort'' bagged the heaviest pig weighed in yesterday at the North Otago pig-hunting competition, but the team was tight-lipped about where they got it.

The 92.5kg boar, one of the heaviest in the more than 30 years of the annual competition organised by the North Otago Deerstalkers' Association, was shot ''up country'' by the team of Murray Oliver (Oamaru), David Smith (Waikouaiti) and Paddy O'Mainan (Waikouaiti).

None owned up to shooting the pig, Mr Smith saying it was ''a team effort''.

Secrecy also applied to where they shot it, although they were more forthcoming about when, saying it was ''at dusk''.

The same team also weighed in the third-heaviest boar at 78kg, its two split by Tony Schofield (Herbert) with his 79kg pig.

From Friday until the 4pm deadline yesterday, 96 shooters of all ages spread out throughout North Otago.

While it was fewer than the 117 shooters last year, organiser Stephen Hanson was still pleased with the response.

The annual Waimate Pest Quest, usually held in August, was moved forward this year and clashed with the North Otago competition.

The shooters weighed in 29 pigs, which surprised Mr Hanson, who thought some pig-hunting areas would not be accessible because of heavy rain over the past fortnight.

All pigs were Tb-tested.
