The pressure being placed on Hampden's public toilets is causing a headache for the town's hall committee and it wants help from the Waitaki District Council to resolve the problem.
The men's and women's toilets are at the rear of the community hall and connected to its septic tank system.
Responsibility for the care of the public toilets falls to the hall committee but its chairman, Howard Selwood, said the demand, often causing queues, was causing blockages in the septic tank system.
He wants the council to help rectify what he termed "a shonky disposal system" or separate the public toilets from the hall.
The hall committee looks after and helps maintain the toilets, one of two public toilet facilities available in the town.
The council is considering upgrading those at Hampden beach and closing the toilets at the hall.
But Mr Selwood said the toilets at the back of the hall were popular and well used.
Because they were public toilets, they should be fully funded by the council, he said.
