Bowling club in danger of having to close down

The Weston Bowling Club - which will notch up its 70th anniversary this year - is in danger of folding due to lack of numbers.

Yesterday, president Margaret Turnbull said a meeting will be held on July 8, at which a decision will be made to close or continue.

The club has about 30 members.

Attempts to recruit more bowlers, through letter-box drops, posting notices in shops and through word-of-mouth, had not seemed to work, she said.

Seventy years was a long time for a club to keep going and she hoped more members could be attracted.

The club's greenkeeper was also giving up, which was another worry.

When contacted, Bowls North Otago president Brian Papps said it was a nationwide problem with social trends meaning fewer people were making commitments to organisations.

Most bowling clubs in North Otago had seen declines in membership over the past 10 to 15 years.

The Weston club had made a very real contribution to bowls in the district and it was sad when a club was in that situation, Mr Papps said.
