The Lower Waitaki Irrigation Company is considering making irrigation water available to properties as far afield as Totara and Weston.
A meeting to assess interest from property owners in the Ridge Rd, Airedale, Ardgowan, Weston, Whiterocks Rd and Totara areas, will be held in the Ardgowan Hall on July 15 at 7.30pm.
Chairman Chris Dennison said the company had been thinking about it for some time.
He stressed it was only about expressions of interest at this stage and not a launch of a scheme.
Some preliminary engineering work had been done but no costings.
The company, which provides water to about 19,500ha on the Waitaki Plains and surrounding hills, was able to supply more water under its existing resource consent.
Initially, it intended to look at the Ardgowan area but then decided it needed to have a "snapshot" of demand for the whole command area.
The company was not competing with the North Otago Irrigation Company as the areas were not readily serviced by NOIC, he said.
The company could supply water from two points - Redcastle Rd (where the Oamaru town water supply has its pump-house) and Jardine Rd.
The company was asking farmers if there was demand.
It needed to be driven by those wanting the water, Mr Dennison said.
