Hundreds of cormorants are again making Sumpter's Wharf in Oamaru home as winter approaches.
The abandoned wooden Victorian wharf is packed from sunset with the birds who have been regular visitors for years, particularly during the winter, and occupying most of the deck.
The wharf has been fenced off to keep people out because it is unsafe, leaving the birds undisturbed.
They have become a tourist attraction, along with the blue penguins nesting around the harbour.
