Sportsman in court over plastic sword

A prominent Otago sportsman was arrested after allegedly carrying an offensive weapon and behaving threateningly on Oamaru’s main street.

The man, aged in his 20s, was granted interim name suppression after appearing in the Oamaru District Court this week along with another defendant, following their arrests on Sunday.

The sportsman faces charges of possession of an offensive weapon and behaving threateningly.

The offensive weapon was a plastic sword, according to court documents.

The other defendant, whose identity was also suppressed, appeared on charges of unlawful possession of an imitation firearm, behaving threateningly and threatening to kill or commit grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged the imitation firearm was a plastic rifle-style firearm.

The pair were arrested in Thames St about 5.30pm on Sunday following multiple reports to police.

Both were remanded on bail to appear in court again on June 3.

Bail conditions for the sportsman include residing at his listed address, not contacting the other defendant, no drinking alcohol and not committing violence.
