St Kevin’s College made a statement with a win over Maheno in the North Otago Netball premier A competition last weekend.

The school side snuck by a single point in a thrilling 46-45 win.

St Kevin’s coach Carmen Brenssell was stoked to come out on the right side of a great game of netball.

"It was kind of back and forward and then Maheno took off. I think they were up six at one stage.

"Both teams would have a wee run and then the other team would come back and then going into that last 15 [minutes] it was just who could hold it.

"We were just so proud of how they held it together.

"All the girls played out of their skins."

The team has carried through the confidence of making the semifinals in 2025 into this year, she said.

"They were still learning their worth last year. It was trying to believe in their worth last year and this year they’ve hit the season knowing they can do it.

"The team’s come together, they’re a team and they know if there’s one that’s not pulling their weight, it affects the whole team.

"They’re a great bunch of girls and I think because they’re so close on and off the court, the expectation is to be all together in a game."

Brenssell and the rest of team would now look to keep their momentum going for the rest of the campaign.

"It’s just regrouping each week and setting new goals.

"We’ve still got some big guns like Valley to play yet... so my girls have still got a lot of work to do."

St Kevin’s are one of three unbeaten teams after two rounds alongside Valley Manawa and Ahi who both recorded big wins at the weekend.

Manawa dispatched Twizel 72-35 while Ahi convincingly beat Waitaki Girls’ High School Wildfire 62-36.

In the final match of the round, Athletic got a win big win over Valley Kaha 69-27.

This weekend, Maheno looks to get back to winning ways against Ahi while Athletic does battle with Manawa.

Valley Kaha are still searching for their first win since earning promotion to the top grade. They take on St Kevin’s and Twizel will play Waitaki Girls’.
