Slice of justice delivered

Oamaru police delivered a slice of justice last weekend while hungry customers were left with cold pizza.

A pizza delivery driver was pinged for drink-driving at a police checkpoint on Thames Highway earlier this month, while out delivering.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said 60 to 70 cars went through the checkpoint with just one being over the legal limit.

The 32-year-old Oamaru woman allegedly recorded a breath alcohol level of 679mcg — over twice the legal limit.

Sgt Woodbridge said police were ramping up with more checkpoints in the town and encouraged people to plan ahead on how to get home.

"Most people plan for a night out but don’t plan how to get home."

Officers had to get their running shoes on to catch a fleeing man in town on Thursday last week.

A 25-year-old Oamaru man led police on a foot chase through a pharmacy, around the block and was eventually caught in the Woolworths carpark.

The previous night, he was arrested following a family harm incident, Sgt Woodbridge said.

After being bailed, he breached bail conditions later that night and trespassed on the victim’s property.

He was spotted in the Eden St carpark by police just before 1.30pm, Sgt Woodbridge said.

He then took off running before being caught.

A 17-year-old was pinged for drink-driving in Oamaru last weekend.

The youth allegedly recorded a breath alcohol level of more than 400mcg after being pulled over just after 11pm on Saturday night, Sergeant Liam O’Toole said.

They were referred to Youth Aid.
