
The club held a small opening ceremony ahead of its Citizens Shield match against Kurow last weekend.
Athies lucked into the grandstand after the softball diamond, where it was sited originally, was lost due to the construction of the Network Waitaki Event Centre.
"They said it was going to be cut up so we said ‘can we have it?’. They said ‘if you get here tomorrow, you can have it’," project manager and life member Warren Pitches said.
"It took seven months of red tape before we got it past the post but once it got going, five Sundays and a committee of people, we got it built.
It sits along Whitestone Contracting Stadium No5 — Athies’ home ground — and seats 50 people.
The work to do the stand up was funded by grants, sponsorship money and the club also sold seats to members.
