However, not all councillors were happy to do that, some seeing it as creating a precedent for changes in the future to suit individual needs.
The council and its committees have met on Tuesdays since local body reorganisation in 1989.
However, that clashes with Community Trust of Otago meetings and Cr Kircher asked if it could be changed to Wednesdays.
Five councillors voted last week to do that, three were opposed and Cr Kircher abstained from voting.
Cr Jim Hopkins suggested that "as a courtesy" the council should give the public a chance to have a say on the matter.
He moved the first council meeting next year be on Wednesday, February 10, at which the council would make a final decision on when to meet during the rest of the year.
That failed for want of a seconder.
Cr Peter Garvan said the decision was for the councillors to make, and they should get on with it.
Cr Helen Stead was disappointed the issue had arisen and suggested it could set a precedent for further changes in the future to suit individuals.
Cr Alex Familton pointed out that the change could be difficult for news media if it clashed with the Oamaru District Court, which sat on Wednesdays.
If something major happened, media may not be able to attend council meetings.
