Oamaru's dog pound seems set to stay in Chelmer St.
With options for relocating the Waitaki District Pound topping $200,000, an $82,000 upgrade at its current location next to the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park has been recommended by council officers in a report to be tabled at today's council meeting.
Relocating the pound was considered after an upgrade was put on hold last year, when the recycling centre's upgrade was taking shape.
An animal behavioural specialist has advised the council concerns about animal welfare could be mitigated through improvements at the site.
The old Kakanui landfill site (at a cost of $228,441), Orbell Rd ($214,041) and Regina Lane ($208,041) were also considered as options, the report says.
``The existing building and site have deteriorated to a degree that limits the council's ability to satisfy legislated animal welfare requirements and produces a reduced quality service with some animal handling limitations,'' the report from council heritage, environment and regulatory group manager Lichelle Guyan reads.
The pound houses about 100 stray or lost dogs a year.
