Police are disappointed with the number of intoxicated drivers, and those very close to the legal limit, processed in the Waitaki district at the weekend.
The Alexandra-based rural drink-drive team stopped 2083 vehicles around Waitaki over the weekend and charged six people with drink-driving.
Drivers breath-tested were found to have breath-alcohol levels of between 95mcg and 922mcg, the latter level more than twice the legal limit.
The ages of the drink-drivers ranged from 18 to 48.
Sergeant Craig Sew Hoy, of Oamaru, said some of those charged had been heading home from sporting functions or after-match drinks.
''It's a reminder for sports club members to think about how they are getting home after functions and games,'' Sgt Sew Hoy said.
''A lot of clubs are in country areas, so members have to think about getting home safely.''
Police were also disappointed by the number of drivers who came close to the legal limit.
On Friday night, a 25-year-old Oamaru man was forbidden to drive for 12 hours after recording a breath-alcohol level of 392mcg, just 8mcg under the legal limit.
''It was not a good result, really,'' Sgt Sew Hoy said.
The message was timely because the winter sports season was approaching, he said.
