The Waitaki District Council is already getting feedback on its proposal to lease Waitaki lakes camping grounds to private operators.
Earlier this year, the council reviewed the way it managed the camping grounds, how much ratepayers were subsidising them, what capital injections might be needed, and various management options.
The council has put out a proposal for public comment to lease out the camping grounds at Parson's Rock, Otematata Boat Harbour, Otematata Wildlife Reserve, Loch Laird and Sailor's Cutting to private operators for up to 21 years.
The Falstone and Ohau C camps are already under private management while another, at Lake Middleton, will be handed back to the Department of Conservation.
It asked for public comment by January 23 and had already received 27 submissions by Tuesday.
Communications adviser Alena Lynch said there was general support for the proposal as long as the camping grounds remained affordable.
''People enjoy the recreational facilities - fishing and boating - and they don't want the camping grounds to be overdeveloped because there is a lot of appreciation for the natural beauty of the lakes and surroundings,'' she said.
In addition to calling for public submissions, the council had representatives at Sunday's Farmers Market in Oamaru to discuss the proposal and will hold a public meeting at the Otematata Community Centre on Wednesday, January 7, starting at 10am.
Recreation manager Erik van der Spek encouraged people to voice their opinion, regardless of whether or not they used the camping grounds.
''We want to hear from as many people as possible,'' he said.
All information relating to the review can be found at www.waitaki.govt.nz, at public libraries throughout the district and at council offices in Oamaru and Palmerston.
Consultation is now open and closes on Friday, January 23, 2015.
The review does not affect camping this season.
