Expo a first for Twizel

Twizel wants to show off the good things it has despite all the talk about the recession.

The Expanding Horizons Expo on October 31 has been organised by community worker and heartlands co-ordinator Jo Heal to showcase activities, pastimes, opportunities and ideas, enhancing "the pleasure from living in a precious corner of paradise".

This is the first time such an expo has been held in Twizel and may be the last, although Ms Heal said that would depend on future demand.

"For a small town, there is so much available and the expo will promote that.

A lot of new people and even older residents aren't aware of that," she said.

That is reflected in the number of exhibitors - already 27 have accepted the offer to showcase what they can offer.

For example, there will be advice and information for those who want to add to qualifications or expand their education, along with careers advice.

A beautician will give demonstrations, and sports clubs will show what they have to offer, from climbing to yoga and t'ai chi.

There will be an art exhibition, library stand and advice on caring for pets, gardening and giving up smoking.

Volunteer groups will have displays for those who want to become more involved in their community.
